La situación laboral de los países desarrollados impone a la filosofía la tarea de pensar el trabajo en cuanto que los cambios producidos pueden afectar - y de hecho afectan- a la concepción de la persona, de la sociedad y del mundo actual. En este artículo, después de cuestionar que estemos asistiendo al final del trabajo a causa de la revolución tecnológica, analizaremos dos propuestas de reducción y reorganización del tiempo de trabajo, y otras dos que hacen referencia a un (...) cambio de paradigma: una rompe la actual barrera entre trabajo asalariado y trabajo no monetarizado, y la otra defiende el subsidio universal garantizado. Background: Moral distress occurs when constraints prevent healthcare providers from acting in accordance with their core moral values to provide good patient care. The experience of moral distress in nurses might be magnified during the current Covid-19 pandemic. Objective: To explore causes of moral distress in nurses caring for Covid-19 patients and identify strategies to enhance their moral resiliency. Research design: A qualitative study using a qualitative content analysis of focus group discussions and in-depth interviews. We purposively sampled 31 nurses (...) caring for Covid-19 patients in the acute care units within large academic medical systems in Maryland and New York City during April to June 2020. Ethical considerations: We obtained approval from the Institutional Review Board at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. Results: We identified themes and sub-themes representative of major causes of moral distress in nurses caring Covid-19 patients. These included (a) lack of knowledge and uncertainty regarding how to treat a new illness; (b) being overwhelmed by the depth and breadth of the Covid-19 illness; (c) fear of exposure to the virus leading to suboptimal care; (d) adopting a team model of nursing care that caused intra-professional tensions and miscommunications; (e) policies to reduce viral transmission (visitation policy and PPE policy) that prevented nurses to assume their caring role; (f) practicing within crisis standards of care; and (g) dealing with medical resource scarcity. Participants discussed their coping mechanisms and suggested future strategies. Discussion/Conclusion: Our study affirms new causes of moral distress related to the Covid-19 pandemic. Institutions need to develop a supportive ethical climate that can restore nurses’ moral resiliency. Such a climate should include non-hierarchical interdisciplinary spaces where all providers can meet together as moral peers to discuss their experiences. (shrink)

The congregation is challenged by modern times that require various life adjustments, including priestly pastoral ministry. Therefore, this study examined the pastoral ministry style for the parishioner’s rural community of St. Petrus Paulus Ampah Diocese in Palangka Raya. A descriptive qualitative approach was used with data collected using participatory observations, in-depth interviews and document studies. Furthermore, the data analysis involved reducing, displaying and process verification. The participants included parish priests, catechists and station council administrators. The results showed that the (...) congregations did not participate in church activities because the pastoral ministry style did not fulfil their needs, economic factors and lack of Catholic faith knowledge. Therefore, the church authorities in pastoral ministry should create a holistic and transformative congregation based on their needs. The current pastoral ministry practice is based on ecclesiastical organisation building and worship (liturgy) focused service. The church should simultaneously conduct catechism practices and charitable diaconia such as social, economic and spiritual activities. This was an interdisciplinary study that focused on practical and pastoral theology, catechesis and social sciences on Catholics’ pastoral ministry style for rural communities.Contribution: Importantly, it contributes to the literature on pastoral style reforms focusing on the congregation’s socio-economic life. El presente trabajo se enfocó a profundizar sobre el tema de las economías verdes y la Responsabilidad Social Empresarial. A través de una investigación documental, se logró evidenciar que las economías verdes siguen estando muy poco desarrolladas en todas partes del mundo, donde Europa es la que más avances posee en dicho tema, quedándose Latinoamérica rezagada al respecto por problemas tecnológicos y de desarrollo. Sobre la responsabilidad social se pudo entender que la misma representa una piedra angular para el desarrollo (...) de las naciones y una de las vías más relevantes para alcanzar la sostenibilidad, reduciéndose problemas como la pobreza y el impacto medioambiental. Se concluyó que la importancia de estos trabajos de investigación radica en la amplitud del análisis que proponen, lo que sirve como un elemento referencial de gran calado desde el cual partir para otras investigaciones. There is an extensive literature on time travel in both philosophy and physics. Part of the great interest of the topic stems from the fact that reasons have been given both for thinking that time travel is physically possible—and for thinking that it is logically impossible! This entry deals primarily with philosophical issues; issues related to the physics of time travel are covered in the separate entries on time travel and modern physics and time machines. We begin with the definitional (...) question: what is time travel? We then turn to the major objection to the possibility of backwards time travel: the Grandfather paradox. Next, issues concerning causation are discussed—and then, issues in the metaphysics of time and change. We end with a discussion of the question why, if backwards time travel will ever occur, we have not been visited by time travellers from the future. (shrink)

We can contrast rationalising explanations of the form S φs because p with those of the form S φs because S believes that p. According the Common Kind View, the two sorts of explanation are the same. The Disjunctive View denies this. This paper sets out to elucidate the sense in which the Common Kind Theorist asserts, but the Disjunctivist denies, that the two explanations are the same. I suggest that, in the light of the distinction between kinds of explanation (...) and particular explanations, the relevant sameness thesis is ambiguous, thus giving us two distinct versions of the Common Kind View. I then argue that the only direct arguments for Disjunctivism available in the literature fail because they only succeed in undermining one version of the Common Kind View. I finish, however, by providing a fresh argument for the Disjunctive View which aims to undermine both versions of its competitor. (shrink)

In an earlier paper I argued that time travellers cannot change the past: alleged models of changing the past either fall into contradiction or else involve avoiding, not changing, the past. Goddu has responded to my argument, maintaining that his hypertime model involves time travellers changing (not avoiding) the past. In the present paper I first discuss what would be required to substantiate the claim that a given model involves changing rather than avoiding the past. I then consider Goddu's hypertime (...) model and an earlier model due to Meiland. I argue that neither author does what would be required to substantiate the claim that the model involves changing (not avoiding) the past. I go on to give reasons for the stronger claim that no-one can present a coherent model and also substantiate the claim that it involves changing (not avoiding) the past. (shrink)

Here is a surprisingly neglected question in contemporary epistemology: what is it for an agent to believe that p in response to a normative reason for them to believe that p? On one style of answer, believing for the normative reason that q factors into believing that p in the light of the apparent reason that q, where one can be in that kind of state even if q is false, in conjunction with further independent conditions such as q’s being (...) a normative reason to believe that p. The primary objective of this paper is to demonstrate that that style of answer cannot be right, because we must conceive of believing for a normative reason as constitutively involving a kind of rationality-involving relation that can be instantiated at all only if there is a known fact on the scene, which the agent treats as a normative reason. A secondary objective, achieved along the way, is to demonstrate that in their Prime Time Errol Lord and Kurt Sylvan do not succeed in undermining the factoring picture in general, only a simple-minded version of it. In this classic exposition of Marxist thought, Raya Dunayevskaya, with clarity and great insight, traces the development and explains the essential features of Marx's analysis of history. Using as her point of departure the Industrial and French Revolutions, the European upheavals of 1848, the American Civil War, and the Paris Commune of 1871, Dunayevskaya shows how Marx, inspired by these events, adapted Hegel's philosophy to analyze the course of history as a dialectical process that moves "from practice to theory." (...) The essence of Marx's philosophy, as Dunayevskaya points out, is the human struggle for freedom, which entails the gradual emergence of a proletarian revolutionary consciousness and the discovery through conflict of the means for realizing complete human freedom. But freedom for Marx meant freedom not only from capitalist economic exploitation but also from all political restraints. Continuing her historical analysis, Dunayevskaya reveals how completely Marx's original conception of freedom was perverted through its adaptations by Stalin in Russia and Mao in China, and the subsequent erection of totalitarian states. The exploitation of the masses persisted under these regimes in the form of a new "state capitalism." Yet despite the profound derailment of Marxist political philosophy in the twentieth century, Dunayevskaya points to developments such as the Hungarian revolt of 1956, and the Civil Rights struggles in the United States as signs that the indomitable quest for freedom on the part of the downtrodden cannot be forever repressed. The Hegelian dialectic of events propelled by the spirit of the masses thus moves on inexorably with the hope for the future achievement of political, economic, and social freedom and equality for all. Ce qu'on appelle 'goût' chez les animaux est une forme du sens chimique, par laquelle l'animal remarque ce qui est comestible. C'est sur la base de cette fonction sensorielle que s'appuye le goût humain. Celui-ci se développe chez le jeune enfant dès qu'il apprend (...) à goûter, à prendre goût a quelque chose, et cela en conformité avec les préférences du milieu ambiant, références que peu à peu il adopte et fait siennes. La formation du goût comporte donc une relation permanente au milieu social ainsi qu'à la langue qui, dans la civilisation, précise tout discernement et toute appréciation. Le plaisir du goût qui juge de la qualité des aliments et des boissons a une valeur exemplaire pour toute relation à ce qui est éprouvé, apprécié et préféré d'une manière sensorielle. C'est cela qu'on dit être 'de bon goût'. Dans une société dont la civilisation et la prospérité sont en progrès, le bon goût exerce une fonction sociale. Mais cette fonction est différente de celle de l'art. Le beau à d'autres dimensions que ce qui est 'de bon goût'. Et dans le phénomène de la mode le bon goût semble pouvoir railler parfois le sens artitistique, sinon la civilisation elle-même. Le domaine du bon goût est comme un domaine intermédiaire et ambigu de la civilisation, où une nature humanisée et une humanité naturelle se fondent l'une dans l'autre. Ce domaine du goût prédominant confine d'une part au champ du besoin du boire et du manger en voie d'humanisation et d'autre part à l'espace illimité de l'art comme culture. Le goût, situé entre le sens naturel et le sens artistique, est la préfiguration du spirituel. Sa signification propre a trouvé son expression dans le langage à l'avènement de l'homo sapiens, cet être caractérisé par l'intelligence, le goût (sapor) de la mesure, de la proportion et de la valeur. In the context of classical (crisp, precise) sets, there is a familiar connection between the notions of counting, ordering and cardinality. When it comes to vague collections, the connection has not been kept in central focus: there have been numerous proposals regarding the cardinality of vague collections, but these proposals have tended to be discussed in isolation from issues of counting and ordering. My main concern in this paper is to draw focus back onto the connection between these notions. I (...) propose a natural generalisation to the vague case of the familiar process of counting precise collections. I then discuss the relationships between this process of counting and various notions of ordering and cardinality for vague sets. Some existing views concerning the cardinality of vague collections fit better than others with my proposal about how to count the members of such a collection. In particular, the idea that we should approach cardinality via certain formulas of a logical language -- which has been prominent in the recent literature -- is less attractive than other existing proposals. In his concept of an anthropological physiology, F.J.J. Buytendijk has tried to lay down the theoretical and scientific foundations for an anthropologically-oriented medicine. The aim of anthropological physiology is to demonstrate, empirically, what being specifically human is in the most elementary physiological functions. This article contains a sketch of Buytendijk''s life and work, an overview of his philosophical-anthropological presuppositions, an outline of his idea of an anthropological physiology and medicine, and a discussion of some episternological and methodological problems. It is (...) demonstrated that Buytendijk''s design of an anthropological physiology is fragmentary and programmatic and that his methodology offers few points of contact for specific anthropological experimental research.Notwithstanding, it is argued that Buytendijk''s description of the subjective, animated body forms a pre-eminent point of reference for all research in physiology and psychology in which the specific human aspect is not ignored beforehand. Le football n'est de ce point de vue qu'un mode spécial de la relationde l'homme au monde. L'auteur rappelle d'abord la signification générale de cette relation. Il (...) s'applique ensuite à analyser la valeur propre de la balle, de la balleélastique surtout, comme objet de jeu. A la lumière de la distinction entre le mouvement du jet et celui du coup de pied il décrit la différence entre le jeu de paume et le football. Le coup de pied est plus agressif que le jet. Caractère d'agressivité qui s'accuse d'avantage encore lorsque dans le jeu, les coups de pied se répondent mutuellement.Aussi bien le football est-il une manifestation de masculinité sous la forme du jeu.On peut jeter comme une fille, mais le shot est essentiellement masculin, même lorsqu'on est femme. C'est pourquoi on n'a jamais réussi à introduire le football parmi les femmes. L'auteur analyse ensuite le caractère si particulièrement captivant du football.Il en trouve plusieurs raisons. Le joueur est entièrement absorbé par la situation, qu'il crée sans doute lui-même pour une part mais qui est constituée aussi par le jeu de l'adversaire et des autres hommes de son équipe. Il s'en suit que tout match est dans un certain sens une aventure. Par ailleurs quelque soit l'art du joueur, il ne peut jamais être parfait parce que le hasard intervient toujours à certains moments. De plus, le jeu se déroule d'une manière dramatique ; il traverse une série de phases critiques et aboutit finalement à une sorte de dénouement. Il faut reconnaître cependant que ces caractéristiques sont communes à plusieurs jeux sportifs sur le terrain, comme p. ex.le hockey et le rugby. L'élément spécifique du football reste, ce que le mot d'ailleurs exprime : le coup de pied au ballon. L'auteur s'interroge enfin au sujet de l'attraction que le football exerce sur le public, plus qu'aucun autre sport dans certains pays du moins. Il en voit la cause dans ce fait que le spectateur prend part d'une manière ambiguë à chaque phase du jeu. Celui qui ne joue pas au football est cependant en état de prendre part au jeu comme spectateur, et plus facilement qu'à beaucoup d'autres sports. Par ailleurs il s'y maintient dans une attitude critique. Le résultat incertain de chaque match entrepris dans de bonnes conditions, la perfection toujours relative du jeu, le rituel propre à ce sport, l'orgueil national ou local qui est engagé dans l'affaire, le culte des joueurs favoris et l'encouragement donné à tout cela par la presse, sont, par ailleurs les facteurs principaux de la popularité extraordinaire du football. Chaque époque et chaque peuple à son sport propre. Au monde actuel convient fort bien la popularité d'un jeu sportif à la fois local, national et international où se manifeste une agressivité masculine modérée ainsi qu'une aptitude technique qui peut s'exercer dans des entreprises dépourvues de danger et qui cependant présentent certains aspects d'un sensationnel tempéré et où peuvent se prendre un orgueil et une célébrité sans conséquences sérieuses. Resumen El estudio del empleo de la palabra adelphos en el Nuevo Testamento en las últimas décadas ha tendido a un consenso donde se favorece la perspectiva literal en la cual se asocia a Jesús de Galilea “hermanos” carnales, según los testimonios de los textos griegos. Sin embargo, desde otra perspectiva como la antropología del parentesco y la historia social parental, los datos que atestigua el Nuevo Testamento no son unívocos y se interpelan a la luz de la estructura familiar (...) exogámica extendida -aspecto crucial- para señalar que los textos aportan datos e información, pero no son en sí la respuesta. A lo cual, se abre una perspectiva más rica en matices y aspectos del parentesco de Jesús y los lazos parentales en Galilea del siglo I d.C.The critical historical study of adelphos in recent decades has tended to a consensus thatfavors theperspective in which Jesus of Galilee is recogniged as “carnal brothers”, according to the testimonies of the Greek texts. However, from the parental anthropology and the social- parental history, the data attested by the new testament are not univocal and are addressed in the light of the extended exogamousfamily structure, a crucial aspect, to point out that the texts provide data and information, but they are not the answer in itself. To which, a richerperspective opens in nuances and aspects of the kinship of Jesus and the parental ties in Galilee of the 1st century AD. (shrink)
